Fue un partido peleado hasta el final en el Monumental peruano, pero finalmente la Selección logró ganarle por 1-0 a los locales, que fueron sólidos abajo y no muy lúcidos arriba, a pesar de contar con gente como Farfán, Pizarro y Cominges entre otros. Un gol del imparable conejo Saviola, tras un centro de Aimar, una peinada de Crespo y un rechace errado de Galliquio, fue suficiente para sentenciar el encuentro.
