Well, that's the problem probably, you should use the "3 textures method", use 3 layers of texture above the colors, and set them like these:
multiply (50%)
overlay (70%)
multiply (100%)
The % of each one will be chosen based on taste but those will work fine with any texture.
That will give you the best result, try it out.
